Heli Aviation flies little Ejen (4) to the children’s clinic

09.12.2011

The boy is nearly four years old but weighs only nine kilos and, even with the help of special nutrition delivered to the village by German Help Three, he has not put on weight. The local doctor decides that Ejen should be flown by helicopter to a special clinic in Nairobi.

For weeks, the Heli Aviation helicopter German Help Three has been flying tonnes of relief supplies to the remote villages of the Turkana region on the Horn of Africa. After several relief transport missions and the subsequent landing in Kaikor, a small village approximately 120 km from Lokichoggio, the crew of the helicopter is led by an employee of a relief organisation to a boy, Ejen.

He is almost four years old but the fact that he weighs only nine kilos and has a bloated belly caused by hunger even prevent the little boy from walking. Help in the form of energy-rich food for the hungry has not succeeded in helping Ejen to gain weight. The boy has already been taking NRG-5, a special preparation which quickly and efficiently supplies the body with carbohydrates, protein and fat, since August and it has contributed to improving his general state of health – but he has not put on any weight.

The doctor confirms malnutrition and serious health problems for the child. He recommends transport to a proper hospital, since the medical resources available in Kaikor are not adequate to help the boy. After consultation between doctors and relief organisations, German Help Three is commissioned to take little Ejen and his grandmother to the children's clinic in Nairobi, approximately 600 km away.

After numerous and extensive examinations, the paediatricians in Nairobi still do not know what the boy is suffering from. But after only two days stay in the specialist paediatric hospital, Ejen looks much better. The treating doctors are sure that the boy will regain his health, and back home in Kaikor, his mother and ten-year-old brother Patrick hope soon to be able to embrace little Ejen and his grandmother again.
