Since 1 July 2011, “RD Emden 14/81” from Northern Helicopter GmbH has been standing by as the offshore rescue helicopter for the wind park construction site in the German Bight. In co-operation with the company Offshore Rettung & Sicherheit GmbH (ORS) of the German Red Cross Ammerland and the wind energy plant manufacturer BARD, the Heli Aviation company Northern Helicopter GmbH developed a new offshore safety concept.
The RD Emden 14/81 is on standby as a rescue helicopter 365 days a year, 24 hours a day at the Emden location for offshore rescue missions. The rescue helicopter is manned by five crew members, consisting of two pilots, the medical crew (a paramedic and an emergency doctor) and a hoist operator. Northern HeliCopter GmbH has H.E.M.S. approval. The operation is led by the co-ordination centre for offshore missions (KSt) of ORS in Rastede. Among others, this control centre is staffed by a medical co-ordinator on land. If an emergency should occur in the building area of the wind energy plants, an alarm is sent to the KSt via a central emergency number, and the KSt immediately sends an alarm to offshore RTH if this is required.
The operation area is about 100 km from the coast and, until the arrival of the RD Emden 14/81, the patients are cared for by paramedics from BARD. After landing, the medical crew of the helicopter takes over the further care of the patient. In the meantime, the medical co-ordinator in the KSt looks for a specialist hospital on the mainland to take the patient. This guarantees that the stabilised patient can be flown to the destination hospital for further care without delay. Since July 2011, the help of RD Emden 14/81 has been requested several times for offshore missions.
Northern HeliCopter GmbH has been authorised by the state of the Lower Saxony to provide an ambulance service. Patients who do not need to be accompanied by an emergency doctor are transported from the East Frisian Islands and Helgoland to the hospitals on the mainland. Since the service started in October 2008, 1,500 missions have been flown to date. In 2011 alone, the ambulance helicopter of NHC (GmbH) flew 702 missions.
Thanks to the holding in NHC, Heli Aviation is in the position to permit prospective CPL(H) and ATPL(H) VFR pilots of the Heli Aviation TRAINING ACADEMY a unique introduction to professional flying. Heli Aviation and NHC offer the chance of a co-pilot place in one of their offshore helicopters. Co-pilot places are allocated based on merit and are awarded exclusively to graduates of the Heli Aviation TRAINING ACADEMY. A professional start to a flying career for every new pilot.
